charge offs

I have a charge off on my credit report that shouldn't be there. The agency that charged it off will not return my phone calls, does not send me bills. This has been going on for 2 years already. I send a little money each month to pay it off (which I don't even know how much I owe) just to show credit that I have been paying something...How much past due does an account have to be before an agency can charge off an account. I missed one month of paying.....I don't know what to do!!! This is the only negative thing on my credit report and I don't want it to hurt!!!!! HELP!!!!
