You asked, "So why would they take the time and effort to report it as paid if they don't have the account anymore. I can pay these debts in full now but is it worth it?"
If you paid it, they have to report it as paid.
Pay the collector the amount listed on the report with a personal check and write the name of the original creditor and the account number shown on the credit report in the memo section of the check. Send a copy of the cancelled check, front and back, to the credit bureau, the original creditor and the collector, and tell them to show the account as paid on the report.
Do not send the collector a money order or some other form of good funds because you won't have proof the debt is paid. The only other way to be sure you get proof is to stand in front of the collector and make them write a receipt showing the amount, account number and creditor.
Check your report every two months or as often as you feel like it. Send all three the copy of the check if they keep reporting it as unpaid. If your right to accuracy under the Fair Credit Reporting Act is trampled, take legal action.
Check in, here, with your progress.
Good luck, Mr. Phelps.
