I had with a credit reporting agency called Experian. I was trying to call them to get a fax number to fax over information that would clear up an entry on my report. This was important to me because I am trying to buy a house and I was denied credit. I am still under contract with the house and I wanted to try applying at a different lender. Before I did this though I needed to clear up the entry on my report. I called every toll free number I could find (four or five of them) to get a live person to give me a fax number. None of them would connect you with a live person. I finally found a phone number for creditors to call and guess what, I got a live person. I asked for a fax number and he gave me one. I tried that fax number and it was disabled from their internal phone network. I tried another fax number that I had from several months ago and got the same result. I called their client number back and explained what was happening when I called the fax numbers. She verified the fax numbers were not working. I asked her to connect me with the consumer department so I could talk to someone about my credit and she said that she could not do that directly. She explained that since a lot of people call and dispute their credit reports, they have changed their policies so that you must first get a credit report sent to you by mail. Then if you have any problem you have a toll free number on the report to call. Needless to say I don’t have the luxury of time on my hands to correct a faulty entry. I finally was able to get her to patch me through to their consumer department. The next lady said they would not give a fax number any more because of their policies. She also said mail takes priority over other forms of communications. After much arguing I was able to receive a fax number to send in my credit information. In short they have deliberately created red tape to make it difficult to dispute credit entries. I might add that I had no problems at all with three other reporting agencies either getting a live person or a fax number. They were also happy to take any information that may correct an entry. It would seem to me that giving easy access to consumers is part of doing business. What makes me so mad about this is that creditors have immediate access to your credit file to report it accurately or inaccurately. It seems to make common sense to me that the consumer should have equal access to their credit file. Do you know if what they are doing is legal?
Any information you could give would be appreciated.
