Exaggerated and false Claim

My credit report showed an account for collection with balance of $2657 by a company unknown to me. I contacted to verify about this claim. The company informed me they purchased it from my former creditor, which reported as profit & loss in 1994 with a balance of $ 992.72, and they are trying to collect this debt plus interest a total of $2657. The company informed that I made a payment arrangement through (Credit Council Service)and paid $73.06 on 11/27/98. While I do not deny the original debt, I never made any payment arragement nor I paid the amount they stated. By the way the company I am dealing with is named [Performance Capital MG, in Irvine CA] Anyone had this type of experience please advice.
