Well, at the moment this is somewhat of a non problem. Your sister in-law is very lucky. I hope she uses the opportunity to establish a good credit history of her own. When I run someone's credit, the file is based on name and address, not the SSN. I suspect she used your address when she applied.

Should she actually obtain loans with your credit, chances are these loans will end up on your credit file. Her existing "bad" credit might also be on your credit.

If you apply for a mortgage, the RMCR will be manually edited to remove her accounts (if any.) However, for most consumer loans and second mortgages your approval will be solely based on your Score. The Score CANNOT be edited.

I strongly recommend you get a copy of your credit to see what's on it. Experian (TRW) will provide you with a free report once a year.

If I wasn't about to apply for a loan, I would not pay for the reports from CBI/Equifax and Trans Union and instead include a copy of your sister in-law's (your) credit report with the request for a free report. I would hope they'd send the reports free of charge, but one never knows.

Please ask your State and Federal Representatives WHY you have to pay for credit reports, WHY you can't get your Scores from the credit bureaus, and WHY you have to spend your free time to deal with this nuisance.

And of course, please let us know what happens.

Good luck, Christine
