The annual fees as well as punitive fees are often astronomical. Some will even charge you for customer service calls to non 800 numbers.
If you have any "dormant" charge or gas cards be sure to use them every now and then. That will greatly improve your credit.
I'd recommend you try to get a secured card, possibly with your bank.
Be sure to check your credit reports for incorrects balances, etc. as well as open accounts you didn't know you had.
