Web hosting is a HUGE subject.

I found that any web site is going to be MORE work that expected. I experienced that most web hosts don't have qualified tech support and being the "loser user" (ISP term for people like me) that I am, it's tough to get anything done.

Last Summer I nearly signed up with a reseller. Any idiot can now be a "web host" reselling accounts for real web hosts, working out of his house and really having NOTHING. He dies or doesn't pay the "real" web host, you're site is gone. Be carful who you deal with.

Znet was pretty good, but got expensive as traffic increased. And after I moved my domain, I had some serious problems with some idiot at customer service who apparently didn't understand the meaning of the word "NOT." I wanted to keep their dialup service, but they shut down my account while I was in Europe.

I tried Tierranet. They screwed up constantly. No telnet, no error logs .... It seemed like idiot proof web hosting, but not so. I also noticed that they do NOT list all the outages and their web server is down a lot more than they claim. I got my access logs and I can see exactly when their web server was down. Oh, and several months after I closed my account there they debited my account over $300. After they got my *extremely* threatening e-mail they immediately responded, apologized all over and credited my account. But who needs the aggravation?

Now I'm with he.net (Hurricane Electric) in San Jose. I'm nearly afraid to say it, but *so far* they have been great. I have telnet access, error logs, web traffic logs, everything works. And it's only $25/month for my plan.

I like their web site. It's simple, loads fast, and has a ton of good info. The FAQ's are great. As I'm currently looking for dialup service in AZ, I'm disgusted with all these sites taking 10 minutes or more to load for a bunch of crappy graphics and little or no useful info.

He.net e-mails my invoice every month, it makes sense and it is accurate.

Customer support has been great, although I haven't needed anything since the first few weeks after moving my domain. They were responsive and didn't screw up my account.

It sounds too good to be true, and I may live to regret posting this :)

Don't expect a web host to teach you web page design or CGI scripting. It must be obvious to anyone that they couldn't stay in business if they did.

You have to decide what you NEED and then select a web host who fits your requirements.

A great web resource is at http://www.wilsonweb.com/
Ralph Wilson also publishes a free newsletter, you can subscribe or read the archived issues at his site. I never hired him for any of his services, but sure learned a lot at his site and reading his newsletter.

And regarding domain name registration, usually the web host has the customer complete a form. Just be sure you put yourself in as administrative and billing contact and AFTER registration check to ensure that it was done right. If you just want to register you domain prior to putting up the site, you can register directly with InterNIC. The details of my struggles with InterNIC are at http://www.bayhouse.com/zoom.html
As a non profit you probably want to be an .org instead of .com, other than that I don't know of any differences.

Hope that answered your questions,

Christine
